December 11, 2000 general meeting

The SCWMC met at the Yorkton Tourism Center Boardroom. Special guest was Mr. Ernie Patrick, agrologist with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food (extension department). He gave a presentation on “Sustainable Manure Management.”

The SCWMC newsletter “The Monitor” will be circulated throughout the area (10,000 copies).

November 13, 2000 general meeting

The committee met at the recreation hall at Good Spirit Lake and embarked on a bus tour of the Big Sky Farms Ltd. construction sites at Rama.

  1. Breeder barn – located at NW1-32-8-W2nd.
  2. Nursery barn – located at SE12-33-7-W2nd.

October 16, 2000 general meeting

A general meeting of the committee was held at the Yorkton Tourism Center Boardroom. Special guest was Mr. Clay Serby, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture.

Structure of the committee was discussed, monitoring and collection of baseline data absolutely vital prior to the hog barns going into operation; monitoring and collection of data on air (odour), water and soil.

September 25, 2000 general meeting

A meeting of the SCWMC was held at the Yorkton Travelodge. An overview of the current review and approval process for intensive livestock operations was explained, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food is responsible for the approval process, and they work closely with the Environmental Assessment Agency (Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management).

Absolutely vital to establish a baseline, to know what is there now, prior to development.

September 19, 2000 general meeting

The meeting was held at the Yorkton Tourism office boardroom. This was the first meeting of the SCWMC, a general discussion took place on the committee concentrating on being specific on Big Sky Farms Ltd. and the environmental monitoring of their operations located at Rama. It was felt that it was absolutely vital to identify and monitor the sites quickly, in order to know what is there now prior to and development and production taking place. Develop a baseline for future comparisons to.

Our mandate will be to MONITOR the soil, water and air (odour) to ensure there is no detrimental affect to the environment from the ILO facilities of Big Sky Farms at Rama to the Spirit Creek watershed.
